Reading the result
- Size to try: the brand's size for the same length in its own chart.
- If in doubt: two sizes are possible. Either your length falls between two sizes of the chart (the nearest one is suggested), or you run trails with descents or long distances: half a size up, up to a full size.
- Measured foot: for brands that publish no foot length, the size is estimated from the cm sizes Nike, Hoka and Salomon give to the same foot.
- The calculation goes through the foot length when both brands publish it, else through the cm size (JP or CM column). The two are never mixed: a JP 27 size is not a 27 cm foot.
- The model comes before the brand: some models run small or large. Follow the size advice on the shop's page for the model you buy.
Measure your foot
① Foot length, from the wall to the tip of the longest toe. ② Room kept in the shoe, about a thumb's width. ③ Heel against the wall.
- Paper on a hard floor, one edge against a wall. Stand, heel against the wall, weight on both feet.
- Mark the tip of your longest toe (not always the big toe) and measure in centimetres.
- Measure both feet and keep the longer one, preferably late in the day.
Enter the measurement as it is in the tool: it takes the smallest size whose published foot length reaches yours, as Nike advises (between two sizes, size up). In the shoe, about 1 to 1.5 cm should remain in front of your longest toe: a thumb's width for Brooks, 1 to 1.5 cm for Mizuno, about 1 cm for On.
US and UK sizes: what changes between brands
- Same US size, different UK size. A men's US 9 is a UK 8 at Nike, ASICS, Saucony and Puma, and a UK 8.5 at adidas, Hoka, Salomon and New Balance.
- Men's to women's US sizes. Add one and a half sizes at Nike, ASICS, Saucony, Brooks and Puma, a single size at adidas and Hoka. Unisex models follow men's sizes (Brooks).
- Read your gender's chart. At Brooks, a women's UK 8.5 and a men's UK 8 are the same size.
- Don't start from your everyday shoes: On advises a running shoe at least half a size above a street shoe, Mizuno half a size to a full size above dress shoes.
Depending on how you run
- Road, racing: the nearest size. No brand gives a rule of its own for racing shoes: fit depends on the model.
- Trail with descents: downhill the foot slides forward. Salomon notes that runners on terrain with a lot of elevation gain and descent take shoes half a size to a full size larger: that is what the "Trail with descents, long distances" option does. Keep a midfoot held well by the lacing.
- Long distances, heat: On notes that feet tend to swell as distance and heat increase. Don't cut your margin.
Width matters too
A shoe gives in width, never in length (Brooks). If it pinches at the sides, look for a wide version rather than a longer size:
- widths are written in letters: at Brooks, D is the standard men's width, 2E wide, 4E extra wide; B is the standard women's width, D wide;
- ASICS, Brooks, Mizuno, New Balance, Hoka, Altra and Topo Athletic make wide versions of some of their models;
- Altra and Topo Athletic design a roomier forefoot than average across their range.
For the rest of the choice (use, cushioning, drop), see the guide how to choose running shoes.
